Die Erde ist nicht genug, Mond und Mars offenbar auch nicht: Google will demnächst das gesamte Universum erfassen. Der Suchmaschinen-Betreiber beteiligt sich am Bau eines Großteleskops, das einmal pro Woche den gesamten Himmel ablichten soll.

Das Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) dürfte nach seiner Eröffnung, die für das Jahr 2013 geplant ist, zu einem der Stars unter den Großinstrumenten der Himmelsforschung werden. Mit seinem 8,40 Meter großen dreiteiligen Spiegel soll das Teleskop den gesamten sichtbaren Himmel erfassen und 3-D-Bilder der Massenverteilung im All anfertigen. Außerdem soll es dabei helfen, die Geheimnisse von dunkler Energie und dunkler Materie zu knacken, die zusammen rund 95 Prozent des Universums ausmachen.

Google hat sich bei der himmlischen Fotoschau jetzt einen Platz in der ersten Reihe gesichert: Der Internet-Suchmaschinenbetreiber ist der Gruppe von 19 Universitäten, US-Nationallaboratorien und privaten Stiftungen beigetreten, die gemeinsam das Teleskop finanzieren, teilte die LSST Corporation mit.

Das Google-Engagement könnte nicht nur für Laien, sondern auch für Wissenschaftler interessant werden, denn das LSST soll einmal pro Woche den gesamten Himmel mit seiner Drei-Gigapixel-Digitalkamera abfotografieren. Das verspricht nicht nur ungeahnte Möglichkeiten bei der Beobachtung schnell veränderlicher Objekte wie Supernovae oder erdnahen Asteroiden, sondern erzeugt auch gigantische Datenmengen: Die LSST Corporation rechnet mit mehr als 30 Terabyte pro Nacht.

Google will die Flut aus Bits und Bytes organisieren und in Echtzeit zugänglich machen. „Googles Mission ist es, die Informationen der Welt universell zugänglich und nutzbar zu machen“, sagte William Coughran, Google-Vizepräsident für technische Entwicklungen. Laut LSST-Projektmanager Donald Sweeney wird das neue Teleskop das stärkste im Bereich der Gesamterfassung des Himmels sein. „Das Universum ist sehr alt, aber in jeder Sekunde geschehen aufregende Dinge“, sagte Sweeney. „Das LSST wird sie Hunderte Male besser finden als die heutigen Großteleskope.“ Google werde helfen, die „scheinbar überwältigenden Datenmengen zu organisieren und zu präsentieren“.

Kommt „Google Universe“?

SST-Direktor Anthony Tyson sieht in der Zusammenarbeit mit Google die Möglichkeit, „Daten in Wissen zu verwandeln“. „Das LSST wird die Art, wie wir das Universum beobachten, verändern. Innovationen im Datenmanagement werden dabei eine zentrale Rolle spielen.“

Offen ist bisher, ob am Ende aber eine Art „Google Universe“ herauskommt, mit dem auch Laien auf die bereits von „Google Earth“ bekannte Art auf virtuelle Reisen gehen können. Einiges spricht aber dafür, denn erst vor drei Wochen hat der Suchmaschinenbetreiber eine Zusammenarbeit mit der US-Raumfahrtbehörde NASA über die intensive Nutzung von deren Bilddaten angekündigt. Erdlinge sollen so künftig nicht nur über die Erde, sondern auch über Mond und Mars fliegen können – auch wenn die frei erhältliche Nasa-Software „World Wind“ das schon längst ermöglicht.

Auch der virtuelle Flug durch das gesamte Universum ist nicht neu: Die Open-Source-Anwendung „Celestia“ etwa bietet diese Möglichkeit schon heute – allerdings wohl weit weniger bunt und detailliert, wie es die Daten der Nasa oder gar die künftigen des LSST versprechen.
