Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have taken the first steps towards such wireless energy transfer by conceptualizing a way to transmit electricity over room-size distances. One day, they say, the technology could power whole households or even motor vehicles wirelessly.The MIT team calls the concept a nonradiative electromagnetic field. It involves two simple ring-shaped devices made of copper. One, connected to a conventional power source, would generate magnetic fields similar to those that power electric motors. These fields would stretch outward a few meters and would only affect the receiving–or companion device–which would be outfitted with a second copper ring tuned to a specific frequency. Team leader Marin Soljačić says he began working on the concept because he wanted to find a better alternative to having to recharge his laptop computer and cell phone so frequently. Dvdfly ist ein Online DVD-Verleih. Ich bin durch Vitamin B daraufgestossen und habe mich mal angemeldet. Es funktioniert so: Je nach Abo kann man 2, 3 oder 4 DVDs gleichzeitig ausleihen. Die Auswahl ist gross: über 13’000 Titel befinden sich im Sortiment.

Wenn man bis 19:00 Uhr bestellt, kommt die Lieferung schon am nächsten Tag an. Ich zahle nun 25.- pro Monat und 3.- pro DVD resp. 2.- wenn sie innerhalb von 6 Tagen wieder retourniert wird – natürlich gratis als Geschäftsantwortsendung! Behalten kann man die DVDs solange man will – man zahlt ja schliesslich seinen monatlichen Beitrag. Sobald man aber die DVDs wieder zurückschickt, darf man die nächsten zwei bestellen. Endlich mal ein vernünftiges Geschäftsmodell!

Es gurkt mich an, wenn Filme mit 2kb/s durch den Esel tröpfeln. Und ich zahle keine 35.- pro DVD, die ich sowieso nur einmal schaue und die dann Platz im Regal wegnimmt. Aber DVDs mieten ist genau das richtige. Und zudem noch legal 😉
