nLite ist ein Programm, mit dessen Hilfe man eine modifizierte Installations-CD-ROM von einigen Microsoft-Betriebssystemen erstellen kann. Ziel ist es, den Installationsaufwand zu reduzieren, und eine Installations-CD zu erhalten, die sich besser an den eigenen Bedürfnissen orientiert. Dafür werden beispielsweise nicht benötigte Komponenten entfernt, Updates (Service Packs und Patches) direkt integriert und Systemeinstellungen auf dem Installations-Datenträger gespeichert.

nLite beherrscht die Integration von Service-Packs sowie Hotfixes mit der Slipstreaming-Methode. Außerdem kann man eine Unbeaufsichtigte Installation vorbereiten und Treiber integrieren.

Eines der wichtigsten Features ist das Entfernen von Programmen wie z.B. Outlook Express, MSN oder von alten Treibern sowie Sprachen, so dass diese erst gar nicht mit installiert werden. Wenn man alles entfernt, beträgt die minimale Imagegröße einer Windows XP Installations-CD (inklusive SP 2 und allen Hotfixes) etwa 94,7 MB .

Ein anderes wichtiges Feature sind die vielen Registry-Tweaks die man voreinstellen kann (z.B. dass keine Ballon-Tipps mehr angezeigt werden).

Als Abschluss lässt sich dann eine bootfähige ISO-Datei erstellen.
