Jabber – plappern, plaudern.

Jabber is best known as „the Linux of instant messaging“ — an open, secure, ad-free alternative to consumer IM services like AIM, ICQ, MSN, and Yahoo (see the IM quickstart). Under the hood, Jabber is a set of streaming XML protocols and technologies that enable any two entities on the Internet to exchange messages, presence, and other structured information in close to real time.

Hmm, ein Messenger, der auf offenen Protokollen basiert und mit mehreren Servern betrieben werden kann? Interessant!

Jabber geisterte schon immer als Begriff herum. Nur habe ich nie tiefer geforscht. Bis heute.
Nach einer Recherche auf Wikipedia bin ich so auf Wildfire und Spark gestossen, ein Jabber-Server und ein Client. Ok, gleich mal installiert und getestet. Instant Messaging, File-Transfer, Konferenz-Chat… Was will man mehr?

Ich war noch nie Fan von Messengern. Aber Jabber ist anders. Das ganz geile daran ist nämlich die Skalierbarkeit. Anders als die meisten Instant-Messenger, welche einen zentralen Server benötigen, greift Jabber auf das gute alte DNS zurück: Wenn ich einen Jabber-Server mit meinen Usern auf kabelsalat.li laufen habe, und jemand möchte eine Nachricht an user@jabber.org schicken, dann wird die Nachricht auch tatsächlich dort weitergeroutet, und umgekehrt! So geil. Im Prinzip E-Mail als Instant-Messaging.

Theoretisch kann jeder seinen eigenen Jabber-Server installieren, und jeder Benutzer kann mit jedem Nachrichten austauschen. Das ist einfach zuuu geil! Und weil’s so schön ist, habe ich auf kabelsalat.li heute Wildfire installiert.

…und gebt dort eure Daten ein. Es ist tatsächlich so einfach!

Und da Jabber ein offener Standard ist, kann man mit einem X-beliebigen Messenger rein. Auch iChat unterstützt Jabber.
