Mit der neuen Technologie will Microsoft nicht nur den Einstieg ins File-Sharing wagen, sondern auch noch bisherige Tauschprogramme übertrumpfen. Das Tool ist dabei dem bekannten Programm Bittorrent nachempfunden.

Bei beiden Tools werden die Downloads zuerst in kleine Pakete zerteilt. Während ein Nutzer eine Datei herunterlädt, werden die Pakete auch an andere Nutzer gesendet, die ebenfalls die Datei herunterladen möchten.

Derartige Systeme kommen mit Millionen Anwendern zurecht und helfen Unternehmen dabei, Kosten zu senken. Denn bei der Verbreitung von Programmen spart eine Firma die Kosten, die bei einem zentralen Server anfallen würden.

Laut Microsoft soll Avalanche künftig 20 bis 30 Prozent schneller arbeiten als Bittorrent. Wie Microsoft die Technologie vor dem nicht genehmigten Musik- oder Filmtausch schützen will, ist derzeit noch nicht bekannt.
