Every single writing has values embedded into it – from choice of story, to choice of words to describe that story. The pretense that there’s a division between news and views is perhaps one of the biggest lies that ever existed in oldmedia – possibly rivalled by the alleged WMDs in Iraq that led to a million dead and the rise of Daesh (the self-appointed „Islamic State“).

These are our values. They take expression from choice of story to choice of words.

Our general attitude

We are funny at the expense of ignorant and/or stupid powerholders.

Our stories are sharable because they are

• Relevant,
• Informative, and
• Funny.

We live and die with the shareability.

We are targeting the 20% most intelligent people of the net generation. That’s our readership. We are deliberately excluding people who choose to not keep up.

That means we use wit, academic language, and lots of subtle nuances. Our mockery of powers and stupid politicians takes many forms, and we are not afraid of excluding people who would rather read about some so-called „celebrity“ named Cardassian. We are including those who share our values (below) – loosely described as the mainstream values of the net generation, challenging the previous powerholders.

Our goal is to build a relationship between ourselves and other intelligent people. What other people think about us or our readers is beside the point.

Remember: if you’re not excluding anybody, you’re not including anybody, either.

We are neither afraid of excluding people nor of hurting people’s feelings. If somebody has a problem with us, they get to keep that problem.

Our choice of stories as well as choice of words and tone can, and sometimes should, be disturbing to people who have grown complacent and comfortable. We consciously want to counteract the trend that „nobody’s feelings must be hurt“, which is a sentiment that is a real danger to progress and to freedom of speech. There was never any right to not be offended. We do not apologize for this attitude.

In order to be shareable, we need to be not mainstream. That means we need to point out when people are plain wrong on some things. We do so in a funny way.

Political values

We write from four political values: We are libertarian, we are collaborative, we are individualist, and we are academic. In general, this can be summarized as the political values of the Internet.

Libertarian: This means that we stand up for the fundamental liberties, even when it is inconvenient to do so – freedoms of assembly, association, information, the press, opinion, speech, and trade. (Freedom of superstition is sometimes mentioned in this context. We consider that freedom to be covered and superseded by the others.)

We observe that a free market has brought wealth wherever it has been introduced, and that socialism and planned, centralized economies have brought starvation and poverty – at best! – wherever they have been introduced. We cherish the decentralized market and reject corruption, corporativism, and legislative pandering to incumbents – especially in political areas that hold themselves to be market economies.

We have a critical eye to all government spending, observing that current incentives make it easy for politicians to be wasteful with other people’s money. We accept that some form of force is necessary to defend liberty, and that such force has a cost to uphold, but remain vigilant that liberty must indeed be the value which is defended with that force.

Collaborative and Sharing: Civilization is built on the sharing of knowledge and culture. The Internet has flipped a turbo switch we didn’t even know we had in this aspect.

Any and all forms of sharing is a good deed. Together, we’re building the Library of Alexandria 2.0. That it happens to be illegal according to today’s laws which were bought into being by gatekeepers of rent-seeking and control is entirely immaterial. Yesterday’s powerholders need to get out of the way.

In particular, we reject all forms of Industrial Protectionism, such as the copyright monopolies and patent monopolies, for many reasons.

This can be summarized as „we’re defending the Internet“.

Individualist: This means that we reject collective paternalism in all its forms. In the words of Martin Luther King, we judge people for their deeds and their deeds alone. Those who would judge people by their gender, their sexuality, or their color of their skin – regardless of in what direction – are stupid, dangerous, and deserving of witty relentless mockery. We reject all forms of identity politics and birth-factor privilege theory as paternalizing, victimizing, and belittling.

(This does not mean we reject voluntary community, where the key word is voluntary, which is another thing altogether from getting discriminatory treatment based on factors at birth.)

Academic and Evidence-based: What falsifiable research indicates to be true, is the best truth we have at the moment. Whether that research is in line with mainstream consensus, inconvenient to incumbent powers, or even completely taboo (like drug research 20 years ago), is entirely beside the point. If somebody is offended by the results of a study, it’s usually because they fear the consequences of the results being correct, and that’s not our problem.

We adhere to academic standards when reporting on studies; we promote falsifiability and call out non-falsifiable dogma as dangerous and destructive.

We do not accept any kind of religious superstition as intrinsically true „just because“ and call out people who do, calling a spade a spade in a way that will probably make them uncomfortable.
