Das Adjektiv subversiv bedeutet “umstürzlerisch” und beschreibt Tätigkeiten, die erstens auf den Umsturz oder die Änderung der vorherrschenden (staatlichen) Ordnung abzielen und zweitens oft im Verborgenen betrieben werden. Auch die diese Tätigkeiten ausführenden Personen oder Organisationen können als subversiv bezeichnet werden.
Der Begriff der Subversion (lat. subversor „Umstürzer“, engl. „Zersetzung“) hat mehrere Bedeutungen. Allgemein bezieht er sich auf Vorgänge, Bestrebungen oder Darstellungen, welche die bestehende soziale Ordnung (Autoritäten, gesellschaftliche Zugehörigkeiten und Hierarchien, Ausbeutung von Gruppen, Machtkonzentrationen usw.) in Frage stellen bzw. verändern wollen.
Subversives Handeln bedeutet verblüffendes, unkonventionelles Handeln. Man verlässt die üblichen Rollenmuster. Man verlässt die Position des Schwachen, des Weinenden, des Fordernden, des politische Anträge Stellenden, man verlässt die Position des Sich-Rechtfertigenden und geht offensiv zum Angriff auf die bestehende Ordnung über. Man übertritt bewusst Normen und ermuntert andere dazu. Oder man hindert die Obrigkeit an der Durchsetzung ihrer Normen. Oder man treibt die bestehenden Normen überzeichnet auf die Spitze und zeigt so immer mehr Menschen, wie falsch diese sind.
