Was müssen wir tun, um in Zeiten globaler Überwachung das Netz widerstandsfähiger und sicherer zu machen? In einem Interview in der aktuellen Ausgabe von Technology Review beklagt Jacob Appelbaum, dass Firmen und die US-Regierung zu großen Einfluss auf vitale Teile des Internets hätten. „Das müssen wir ändern. Dafür brauchen wir nicht das alte System vollständig aufzugeben, aber wir müssen es erweitern.“ Vor allem müsse es mithilfe von Peer-to-Peer-Netzwerken dezentralisiert werden und durch alternative Namensverzeichnisse wie GNS die derzeitige Hoheit von Verisign bei der Namensvergabe von Adressen aufzuteilen.
Appelbaum sieht als großen Schwachpunkt in der globalen Kommunikation das derzeitige E-Mail-System. „Diese Technologie ist nicht gut genug.“ Sie biete Privatsphäre „auf dem Niveau des 19. Jahrhunderts“, so Appelbaum. Es gebe keine Möglichkeit, E-Mail in der derzeitigen Form sicher zu machen. Auch das Verschlüsselungsverfahren PGP sei keine Alternative, „weil es nicht hundertprozentig sicher und zudem ein Albtraum in Sachen Benutzerfreundlichkeit ist.“
Zuversichtlich ist Appelbaum hinsichtlich Verschlüsselung. „Ich glaube nicht, dass es der NSA gelingen wird, unsere besten Verschlüsselungssysteme zu knacken. Die Mathematik ist zu gut.“ Trotzdem müssten noch manche Probleme gelöst werden, zum Beispiel das der Folgenlosigkeit und des Schutzes der Metadaten. Das größte Problem sieht Appelbaum aber nicht in der Verschlüsselungstechnik sondern im Zugang zu ihr: „Sichere Verschlüsselung muss Standard sein – und zwar in jedem Smartphone.“

Ein neues Internet muss her! Aktuell pusten wir unsere Daten standardmässig im Klartext durchs Netz. In Zeiten, wo die NSA global alles abhört und aufzeichnet. Tragisch, dass die Verschlüsselung der Netze nicht standard ist.
Das wollen wir ändern.
Wir haben uns folgendes überlegt:
Mit einer Partei erreicht man nicht viel. Die Piratenpartei stellt bloss Forderungen auf, und produziert gefühlt nur heisse Luft. Es passiert nichts. Korrigiert mich wenn ich falsch liege. Stiftungen, Gesellschaften, Petitionen – alles schön und recht. Da wird rege diskutiert und beschlossen. Aber es scheint auch nicht viel zu bewirken.
Die einzige Möglichkeit, um wirkungsvoll gegen diese Überwachungsgiganten anzutreten, ist, technisch einen Riegel vorzuschieben. Kryptographie benutzen, verschlüsseln. Mathematische Gesetze kann man nicht leicht brechen.
Aber Krypto ist fusselig zu bedienen, man braucht gefühlt ein paar Doktortitel, um PGP zu benutzen. An eine Cryptoparty kommen knapp 50 Leute von sieben Millionen Einwohnern.
Die Leute sind zu bequem.
Die Leute sind faul.
Die Leute sind Konsumenten.
Kombinieren wir das alles mal: Bequeme Konsumenten, wollen Sicherheit, bei der sie bestenfalls nur ein Kabel einstecken müssen. Die einzige Möglichkeit, wo man nur ein Kabel einzustecken braucht, ist: Hardware.
Und wir haben so eine Lösung gebaut:
Die Enigmabox.
Da drauf läuft ein vorkonfiguriertes cjdns mit Hyperboria-Zugang. Wir erinnern uns: cjdns bietet Perfect Forward Secrecy, End-to-end Verschlüsselung, Meshfähigkeit und automatisches Routing. Unser Plan
Möglichst viele dieser cjdns-Boxen unter die Leute bringen. Die Boxen sind insofern nützlich, dass sie mal ein VPN anbieten, und sämtliche Ports von aussen sperren. Man kann also, wenn man möchte, sein gesamtes Heimnetzwerk über ein anderes Land umleiten. Und das ohne Softwareinstallation, völlig Hardware- und Betriebssystemunabhängig.
Mit jeder Box wird aber auch gleichzeitig das cjdns-Netzwerk vergrössert. Irgendwann kommt eine Regierung auf die Idee, das Internet immer mehr zu zensieren. Und schliesslich ganz abzuschalten.
Aber dann legen wir den Schalter um, und Bumm – Hyperboria, das cjdns-Netzwerk, ist unser neues Internet. Es ist ja dann bereits unter den Leuten, in Form einer unscheinbaren VPN-Box.
Und wir haben gewonnen.
