Burning Mountain. Ein Goa-Festival mitten im Engadin.

The Burning Mountain Festival is a 4 days experience of radical self expression and self commitment. The goal of the Festival is all about community and culture. It’s a social survival camp. As our social life is transforming more and more into a digital way, we want to be able to connect and exchange and interact “offline” with each other. The Burning Mountain Festival is not about consuming, it is about participating. We believe that this peaceful interaction is best achieved through commitment and sharing. The unifying action is dancing. Therefore, music will always be a great part of our culture.

Anyone may be a part of Burning Mountain. We welcome and respect the stranger.

Burning Mountain encourages the individual to discover, exercise and rely on his or her inner resources.

Ankunft

Es ist Nacht. Die umliegenden Berge reflektieren Licht und Schall, der dumpf durch das Tal dröhnt. Auf was lassen wir uns da ein? Eine Technoparty? Eigentlich nicht so mein Ding. Aber die Philosophie klingt toll und ich bin Fan von alternativen Festivals mit exotischen Erdlingen, wie letztes Jahr das Wacken.

Aber im Gegensatz zum Wacken sind die Menschen bunter angezogen. Keine blutverschmierten Schädel, keine Schwerter, keine echte Gitarrenmusik. Sondern UV-aktive, bunte Dekorationen, Laseranlagen und synthetischer Sound erwartet uns. Willkommen im Wunderland.

Das Zelt ist aufgestellt, wir setzen uns ans Lagerfeuer im Festivalgelände. Keine 10 Minuten vergehen, haut uns jemand an:

An solchen Parties Substanzen angedreht bekommen ist so eine Sache. Lieber nicht. Wir haben unsere eigenen Sachen dabei, wo man weiss, was man hat.

Ich hab‘ ja mal erwähnt, dass ich nicht einfach auf Parties gehe und wahllos Sachen einwerfe. Wir sahen genug Leute, die das tun und dabei ziemlich übel aussahen.

Nope. Wir testen pro Nacht genau eine Substanz, wenn überhaupt. Diesmal mit dem Setting: Licht, Laser und Bum-Bum Musik.

Erste Nacht

Wir suchen ein ruhiges Plätzchen abseits vom Festival. Nur für denn Fall, dass wir Ruhe brauchen und lieber die Natur geniessen wollen. Die Dosis ist aber gering, und wir sind doch Neugierig, wie sowas in so einer Umgebung wirkt.

Es ist kalt. Zurück zum Zelt. Lockere Gespräche und milde Euphorie. Draussen wird’s langsam dunkel. Gehen wir raus?

Ich öffne den Zeltreissverschluss und tappe ins Halbdunkel. Blick zur Hauptbühne – BOAH! Dort funkelt es aber gewaltig! Die Laseranlagen und Scheinwerfer sind in Betrieb – sieht toll aus!

Mal hingehen und schauen. Es ist kalt. Wir gönnen uns erst noch einen warmen Chai – ein Spitzengetränk; asiatischer Tee mit Milch, braunem Zucker, Kardamom, Zimt, Ingwer, Pfefferkörner und Nelken. Siehst du, lieber Rest-Der-Welt; ganz ohne Alkohol.

Weisst Du, wie mir das jetzt grad vorkommt? In dieser Kälte und bei der Musik und unter solchen Leuten fühle ich mich wie in einer Weltraumbar irgendwo auf Mos Eisley. Das ist zwar kein Eisplanet; aber es ist arktisch kalt hier draussen, und ‚Eis‘ kommt halt im Namen vor…

Als ob ich mich in einem Computerspiel befinde. Eine Spielwelt mit vielen Levels. Und die Leveldesigner haben das sehr schön hergerichtet. Da ist die Weltraumbar, wo sich der Abschaum des Universums zum unkomplizierten Klatsch trifft. Dort haben andere einen Kreis mit Fackeln aufgestellt und duellieren sich mit Feuerschwertern. An einem anderen Ort haben Händler Materialien von ihrem Heimatplaneten aufgestellt, die besonders schön im Schwarzlicht leuchten. Und da – da stehen viele Wesen auf einer Plattform und bewegen sich im Takt. Sie werden von vier Steuermännern auf einer erhöhten Plattform vorne angetrieben. Komm, da stehen wir jetzt auch rein!

Alle stampfen gleichmässig im Takt. Als ob sie etwas antreiben, etwas fertigstellen müssen. Was wird das, wenn es fertig ist? Aber sie hören mich nicht. Sie machen einfach weiter. Schritt für Schritt – *bäm* *bäm* *bäm* *bäm*.

Ah jetzt weiss ich’s! Das ist eine intergalaktische Hovercraft-Plattform, die sich durch unbekanntes Terrain bewegt. Diese Leute müssen den Motor antreiben, die Steuermänner steuern das Gefährt und geben den Takt an. *Bäm* *bäm* *bäm* *bäm*. Manchmal kommen Unregelmässigkeiten auf dem Weg; Hindernisse müssen überwunden werden. Das Ganze tönt so:

Okay. Ich verlasse die Landeplattform und begebe mich zur Feuerstelle. Rauch und Funken schlagen mir entgegen.

Ums Feuer sind viele Sternenvölker versammelt. Die ganze Welt kommt hier in einer Runde zusammen – Chinesen, Japaner, Schwarze, Weisse, Grüne, Rote, Hippies, Hip-Hopper, Metalheads, Afrikaner, Südamerikaner, Engländer, Polen – einfach alle. Dieser Planet ist der Treffpunkt interdimensionaler Rassen und Kulturen.

Wie ein Rudel Wölfe, welche im Winter Wärme suchen, scharen sie sich ums Feuer. Niemand kümmert sich drum, woher jemand kommt, wie er aussieht oder wie er sich verhält. Man erfreut sich an der gegenseitigen Andersartigkeit.
Und man kann einfach so mit den Leuten reden. Oder auch einfach so schweigen.
Jemand hat eine Art Minigitarre im Mund eingespannt und spielt zum Beat der Musik mit. Hammer Stimmung. Jemand anders wickelt einen riesen Dampfhammer gefüllt mit Hanf (aka „Joint“) für die ganze Runde. „Boah, huere gross!“ sage ich. „Isch jo au e grossi Rundi“ bekam ich zur Antwort.

Und so verbringen wir noch eine Weile am Feuer in dieser heiligen Runde, bis wir müde werden und uns wieder in unsere Zelte begeben.

Zweite Nacht

Es dunkelt wieder ein. Zeit, einen Realitätsfilter zu aktivieren, um die Umgebung anders wahrzunehmen.

Wir stehen vor der Bühne und warten.

Irgendwie ist etwas anders. Ich kann nicht genau sagen was, aber etwas ist verändert. Nach einer Weile fällt es mir auf: Die Scheinwerfer leuchten in strahlenden Farben! Dieses Rot ist ja wirklich – rot! Und das satte Violett… Oder das Blau erst! Boah.
Einzig die LEDs kommen mit ihrem kalten Licht üüüberhaupt nicht zur Geltung! Ich hoffe schwer, dass sich dieser LED-Schrott nicht durchsetzt.

Ich gehe weg von der Bühne, um die restliche Umgebung zu begutachten.

Das hier ist ein Galaxienball, der im UV-Licht wunderschön erstrahlt. Fünf Minuten stehe ich regungslos da und starre dieses Prunkstück an. Und gleichzeitig muss ich feststellen, dass man das unmöglich fotografieren kann – die Farbwiedergabe findet ja im Kopf statt und würde auf dem Foto nicht anders aussehen als sie auch sonst aussieht. Also noch ein wenig geniessen!

Ich gehe weiter. Die ganze Umgebung schimmert Orange vom Feuer. Der Stand mit dem UV-aktiven Ginggernillis leuchtet mir entgegen. Grünes Laserlicht von der Bühne funkelt an den Berg. Eine violette Laseranlage zündet in den Himmel. Die Scheinwerfer beleuchten den ganzen Hang rund ums Gelände. WOW! Jetzt verstehe ich, warum diese Parties immer so funkelnd und farbig sind – genau für Leute, die unter Einfluss von farbverändernden Psychedelika stehen. Das ganze Fest ist extra dafür eingerichtet und abgestimmt.

Wir gehen ins Tanzzelt. An den Wänden sind psychedelische Ölbilder aufgehängt, die im Schwarzlicht funkeln. Doch es wird gleich dunkel. Nebelmaschinen mötten alles zu. Die Lasershow beginnt!
Ich stehe staunend und fast regungslos in der tanzenden Menge und bestaune das Laserfeuerwerk, welches mir da im Takt entgegenstrahlt. Grüne Tunnel, violette Röhren, blaue Wellen, gelbe Strahlen. Wir sind genau zum richtigen Zeitpunkt da.

Nach einer Weile verlassen wir das Zelt wieder. Draussen lassen ein paar Leute selbstgebastelte Heissluftballons steigen; wie künstliche Sterne beleuchten sie den gesamten Himmel.

Feuerartisten schwingen ihre Stäbe. Jeder macht irgendetwas und trägt dazu bei, für Licht und Stimmung zu sorgen.

Ich hätte nicht gedacht, dass es ein Fest gibt, welches die Sinne so tief berührt. Aber das ist genau die Philosophie: „Burning Mountain encourages the individual to discover, exercise and rely on his or her inner resources.“

Eine wunderbare Erfahrung. Und für mich eine Erkenntnis: Lärm und viele Menschen müssen nicht unbedingt ein schlechtes Setting sein…

Das ganze Fest verlief enorm friedlich. Kein Gepöbel, keine aggressiven Alk-Leichen, kein Geschrei auf dem Zeltplatz. Es ist wie am Wacken. Nur diesmal definitiv mit etwas mehr Woodstock-Feeling. 😉
