Das Problem ist nicht der Cache an sich. Das Problem ist, wie Nginx damit umgeht, wenn der Cache verfällt.

Der Cache hat ein Ablaufdatum, eine Time-To-Live, TTL. Läuft diese ab, muss das HTML vom Backend neu geholt werden. Und wenn der Cache bei 500 gleichzeitigen Anfragen pro Sekunde abläuft, muss das HTML 500 mal gleichzeitig vom Backend geholt werden. Schönä!

Wer Dienste von grossen Firmen nutzt, begibt sich in Abhängigkeit. Das Internet funktioniert anders – verteilt, dezentral, ausfallsicher und nicht zensierbar. So muss es sein!

Es gibt Dienste, die sind von Anfang an für das Internet entworfen worden und funktionieren heute noch wunderbar – E-Mail, IRC, Jabber, oder ganz normale Webseiten. Wir sollten wieder dort zurückfinden; dort wo jeder sein eigener Dienst ist und die Hoheit über seine Daten hat. Ich sehe erfreuliche Entwicklungen in diese Richtung – z.B. Status.net oder Diaspora. Und dass man in einem verteilten Dienstewirrwarr trotzdem seine Zugangsdaten einheitlich verwalten kann, beweist OpenID.

Ich nutze Twitter, Github und Dienste von Internetfirmen als Ergänzung, um Informationen zu verbreiten, aber niemals als einzigen zentralen Informationsknoten.

Die Ereignisse der vergangenen Tage haben gezeigt: Dezentrale, offene Dienste funktionieren am besten und lassen sich schwer abschalten.

Als ich Lokaljournalist war, bekam ich aus allen Parteien Informationen und veröffentlichte sie. Ich wusste noch vor den meisten Parteimitgliedern, wer der nächste Bürgermeister ist. Diese erfuhren das aus der Zeitung. Das richtete natürlich einen gewissen politischen Schaden an. So what? Das war mein Job, meinen Lesern zu sagen, was vor sich geht. Ich habe versucht meinem Verlag zu erklären, dass wir mehr Informationen verbreiten können wenn wir das Internet nutzen. Man hat das bis heute nicht verstanden.

Was Wikileaks macht, ist nichts anderes als Journalisten bisher gemacht haben. Die haben nur deshalb nicht alles veröffentlicht, weil sie schlicht nicht den Platz oder die Sendezeit haben. Noch heute gilt auch im Internet eine Art Selbstzensur, was die Länge angeht. Wikileaks sieht sich aber nicht als Gatekeeper, der dem dummen Bürger die Welt erklärt, sondern sieht den Bürger als mündig an und gibt ihm die Informationen direkt in die Hand. Wohlgemerkt, das ist nichts Neues.

Warum nun diese Hetze gegen Wikileaks? Weil zum einen die USA angegriffen werden, und diese nicht anders können als reflexartig nach Zucht und Ordnung zu rufen, statt einmal zu überlegen, warum aus ihrem Hochsicherheitsbetrieb diese Daten überhaupt rauskommen können. Oder mal darüber nachzudenken, wie diplomatische Kabel verschickt werden. Zum anderen wiel auch die klassischen Medien ein Interesse an der Jagd auf Assange haben.

Die Presse galt gemeinhin als vierte Gewalt im Staat. Der Satz impliziert aber damit eine Rolle im Staat, eine Funktion. diese Funktion ist die des Überwachers. Schauen wir die Praxis an, hat die Presse diese Funktion aufgegeben. Man sitzt in der Bundespressekonferenz und schreibt brav auf was Minister sagen. Wenn es um investigativen Journalismus geht, müssen immer Leyendecker oder Wallraff ran, andere gibt es nicht. Ich habe selbst für meine Zeitung einst ein Stück über Scientology geschrieben, das hat mich ein halbes Jahr Recherche gekostet – ich musste das in meiner Freizeit machen. Die meisten Journalisten und Verleger haben noch immer nicht verstanden, dass sich ihre Rolle ändern muss. Dass sie keine Gatekeeper mehr sind, sondern Erklärbären werden müssen.

Weil das aber nicht so leicht ist, sehen sie sich von Wikileaks angegriffen wie zuvor von Bloggern. Der meist verächtliche Ton wenn es um Blogs geht ist nicht anderes als Ausdruck puren Neides. Die dürfen und machen was man selbst sich nicht traut. Warum braucht es Wikileaks um einen Maulwurf in der FDP zu enttarnen? Und warum, das am Rande, wird darüber berichtet, wenn es doch Informationen sind, die diese schlimmen Cyberterroristen verbreiten?

Es geht um die Informationshoheit. Weder Staat noch Presse wollen diese abgeben. Sie wollen kontrollieren. Die einen um an der Macht zu bleiben, die anderen um Auflage zu machen mit vermeintlicher Exklusivität. Dem Bürger wird nicht zugetraut, mündig zu sein und Quellen im Original zu verstehen. (Das hängt übrigens mit dem akademischen Hintergrund zusammen. Journalisten werden quasi von kleinauf auf Elfenbeinturm getrimmt. Das war bei mir selbst so).

Und deshalb werden journalistische und juristische Standards einfach mal über den Haufen geworfen. Zum Beispiel:

• Interpol sucht jemanden international weil er wegen Sex ohne Kondon befragt werden soll?
• Die USA reden von Auslieferung, ohne dass es formal einen Haftbefehl gibt
• In den USA fordern Politiker Attentate auf Assange
• Bei Assange wird von Vergewaltigungsvorwürfen gesprochen, obwohl es sich nach deutschen Sprachgebrauch höchstens um sexuelle Nötigung handeln dürfte (wenn überhaupt)

Wir, die Bürger, sind aufgerufen, zu entscheiden, ob wir ein freies Internet wollen, in dem es bisweilen auch mal unbequem wird, oder ob der Staat auch diesen Bereich kontrollieren soll (mit allen Konsequenzen). Ich hatte heute eine kurze Twitterdiskussion ob Hacker-Attacken gegen Visa und Co. sinnvoll sind. Ich glaube ja. Ich sehe das als eine Art Online-Demonstration. Die Payback-Initiative mag zwar sowas wie der Autonome Block sei, aber ich denke sie zeigen auf, was die RAF einst schon tat: Wenn der Staat gepiesackt wird, zeigt er sein faschistisches Gesicht. Nun mag faschistisch heute nicht mehr richtig sein, tatsächlich aber werden staatlicherseits nicht Diskussionen geführt, sondern repressiv gehandelt. Consultants haben die Eigenschaft, viel, laut und lange zu Diskutieren. Kundentelefonate, Besprechungen, Apéros…

Techies haben die Eigenschaft, ruhig und konzentriert in Codewelten zu schwelgen. Und sie haben noch etwas: Macht über Maschinen. Sie können den Maschinen beibringen, etwas nützliches für sie zu tun.

Diese Idee hatten wir, und daraus entstand ein Lab-Projekt: Eine Arduino Installation.

Arduino ist eine Open-Source Hardware Plattform, welche einen schnellen Einstieg in die Hardwareprogrammierung ermöglicht. Man hat ein paar Eingänge, ein paar Ausgänge, und kann das Board mit diversen Zusatzmodulen und Sensoren erweitern.

Wir haben uns eine LED-Matrix, ein Mikrofon, ein Ethernet-Shield und einen Servomotor boschtet.

Was kam dabei heraus?

Ein „Finger“ 🙂

Er misst alle 100ms den Geräuschpegel und vergleicht diesen Wert mit dem Vorherigen. Falls die Differenz einen bestimmten Wert überschreitet, wird das Penalty-Level erhöht. Die Penalty-Skala geht von 0 bis 23.

Der Penalty-Handler kümmert sich um die Aktionen, die in den Levels auszuführen sind. Finger heben wenn es laut wird, nach einer Weile Stille Finger wieder senken, Twittern wenn es übermässig laut ist…

Der Geräuschpegel ist laut, Penalty-Wert wird erhöht und auf der LED-Matrix angezeigt:

Grün, Orange, Rot, Finger hoch, twittern!

Der Finger bleibt solange oben, bis es wieder ruhig ist.
