Ein Blick macht klar: Die TV-Serie «My Little Pony» ist für kleine Mädchen. Die Welt ist pink-violett-pastellfarben, Hauptfiguren sind knuddelige Ponys, die mit hoher Stimme sprechen. Seit ein paar Jahren hat die Serie eine grosse Fangemeinschaft gewonnen – und es sind nicht nur kleine Mädchen.

Sie sind im Schnitt 15 bis 30 Jahre alt, männlich und heterosexuell gemäss einer Studie von zwei Psychologen. Sie nennen sich «Bronys», eine Verschmelzung der Wörter «Bro» und «Pony» und sind erklärte Fans der Serie «My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic». Sie kommen an riesigen Treffen zusammen, bilden Fan-Gemeinschaften, schreiben Fanfiction und diskutieren über Details von Equestria, dem Land, in dem die Serie spielt. Auch zwischen dem Hersteller und den Fans gibt es regen Austausch.

Und zu den Fans gehören Personen aus allen Berufsgruppen, sogar Soldaten, die sich Insignien aus der Serie an ihre Uniform stecken und ihre eigene Facebook-Seite pflegen. Schliesslich geht es in der Serie, wie im Militär, um Freundschaft, Zusammenarbeit und Teamgeist.

Männer und Ponys, das wiehert (fast) wunderbar

«My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic»-Fan Martin Ebnöther im Interview:

Ihren Anfang nahm die Brony-Bewegung auf der kontroversen Plattform 4chan, auf dem die TV-Serie «My Little Pony: Friendship ist Magic» diskutiert wird. Bald artete dies in die «Pony Wars» aus, einen Zwist zwischen Fans der Serie und den Gegnern dieser pastellfarbenen Ponywelt. Die Pony-Fans gewannen und etablierten sich schliesslich auf anderen Blogs, etwa auf «Equestria Daily».

Männer und Ponys – wie passt das zusammen? Offenbar so gut, wie jede andere Fangruppe zum Objekt ihres Fantums, etwa die «Trekkies» zur Serie «Star Trek», die Metal-Fans zu ihrer Musik. Die beiden Psychologen Patrick Edwards und Marsha Redden haben faktisch von Beginn weg das Phänomen der Bronys wissenschaftlich begleitet und bereits mehrere Studien zur Fankultur der Bronys durchgeführt. Und sie stellten fest: In all ihren Daten finden sie nichts Pathologisches an dieser Fangruppe, es sind Fans wie alle anderen auch.

Trotzdem haben Bronys immer wieder mir Vorurteilen zu kämpfen, werden rasch mit Etiketten wie pädophil, schwul, unheimlich oder lächerlich versehen. Quatsch, schreibt Rebecca Angel im Online-Magazin «Wired».

Und der Schweizer Brony Martin Ebnöther sagte im Interview gegenüber SRF Digital: «Mädchen, die mit Transformer-Figuren spielen, das ist in Ordnung – wenn aber Jungen mit Puppen spielen, das geht dann gar nicht». Die von der Gesellschaft definierten Geschlechterbilder wirken gerade auch für Männer noch sehr stark – und führen deshalb rasch einmal dazu, dass Bronys Ablehnung erfahren.

Ponys mit Tiefgang

Martin Ebnöther entdeckte die Serie 2012 und hatte ebenfalls seine Zweifel an der Serie, die jedoch rasch weggefegt wurden. Ihn überzeugten dieselben Gründe, wofür die Serie allgemein geschätzt wird: Die Ponys von Equestria haben ihre Ecken und Kanten, sind Figuren mit einer Komplexität und Tiefe, wie sie vielen ähnlichen TV-Serien fehlt.

Zudem entwickeln sich die Figuren im Verlauf der Serie weiter, woran es gerade etwa den Figuren von «Die Simpsons» mangele, so Ebnöther. Und natürlich mache es auch Spass, andere Leute damit zu verwirren, als erwachsener Mann für Ponys zu schwärmen.

Schliesslich gelingt es der Serie, sowohl jüngere als auch ältere Zuschauerinnen und Zuschauer anzusprechen: Klar, die Zielpersonen sind primär und immer noch kleine Mädchen. Gleichzeitig verweist «My Little Pony» immer wieder auf Inhalte, die ein deutlich älteres Publikum ansprechen, etwa mit Zitaten aus dem Film «The Big Lebowski» oder aus «2001: A Space Odyssey».

Serie für Mädchen: ja. Klischees: nein

Begonnen hat alles in den 80er-Jahren mit kleinen Pony-Plastikfiguren in Pastellfarben und langen Mähnen aus Plastikhaar. 2010 entwickelte der Spielzeughersteller und Eigentümer Hasbro eine neue TV-Serie mit den Pastell-Pferden unter dem Namen «My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic», die im fiktiven Land Equestria spielt.

Hauptfigur der Serie ist das Einhornpony Twilight Sparkle, das zuviel Zeit mit seinen Büchern verbringt. Deshalb schickt es seine Lehrerin in die Stadt Ponyville, um mehr über die Magie der Freundschaft zu lernen. Dort lernt Twilight Sparkle weitere Ponys kennen, die schliesslich zusammen mit ihr den Kern der Serie ausmachen: Rainbow Dash, Rarity, Fluttershy, Pinkie Pie und Applejack.

Ergänzt wird die Welt von Equestria mit zahlreichen weiteren Figuren und einem durchdachten Bedeutungskosmos. Jede der sechs Hauptfiguren wird etwa von einem Haustier begleitet und verkörpert ein spezifisches Element. Twilight Sparkle beispielsweise repräsentiert das Element der Magie, Rainbow Dash die Treue und Rarity das Element der Grosszügigkeit – alles Elemente, die für Freundschaft wichtig sind. Zudem trägt jedes Pony einen «Schönheitsfleck» (engl. «cutie mark»), ein Zeichen, das die spezielle Fähigkeit des jeweiligen Ponys aufzeigt.

Keine braven Ponys für echte Mädchen

Entwickelt wurde die Serie von Lauren Faust, die als Mädchen ein grosser Fan der «My Little Pony»-Plastikponys war. Unter ihrer Hand entstand eine Serie, die sich vor allem an Mädchen und ihre Eltern richtet – die bekannte Zielgruppe nach der Vorgabe von Hasbro. Gleichzeitig wollte sie ihren Wunsch nach komplexeren Figuren für Mädchen verwirklichen. Denn was sie sie bisher antraf, insbesondere bei früheren «My Little Pony»-TV-Serien, enttäuschte sie:

«Sie sind so hübsch, höflich und perfekt; es gibt keine seriösen Konflikte und es passiert überhaupt nie etwas Aufregendes. Kurzum: Zeichentrick-Serien für Mädchen kommen langweilig rüber. Doof. Lahm.»

Dieser klischierten Langweile wollte sie etwas entgegensetzen. Sie erschuf Ponyfiguren, die den Charakteren realer Mädchen entsprechen: Figuren, die wagemutig, einfältig, stark, albern, fleissig, faul sind – und trotz ihrer grossen Unterschiede miteinander auskommen und Freundinnen sind.

Meet Derpy Hooves, das schielende Pony

Der Spielzeughersteller Hasbro und die Macherinnen und Macher der Serie waren zuerst von der ungewöhnlichen Fangruppe von «My Little Pony» überrascht. Dann akzeptierten sie die Bronys jedoch und kamen der Fangruppe entgegen.

So taucht beispielsweise in der allerersten Folge ein Pony auf, das aufgrund eines Animationsfehlers stark schielt. Die Bronys schlossen das schielende Pony, das eigentlich nur zur Hintergrunddekoration verwendet wurde, sofort ins Herz. Es erhielt von ihnen den Namen «Derpy Hooves», mit einem augenzwinkernden Verweis auf den Netzbegriff des «Derp». Hasbro reagierte auf «Derpy Hooves» und integrierte das schielende Pony in zahlreichen weiteren Folgen – zum Entzücken der Fans.
